MUKADDIMAH · M40

Allah states:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا
“O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.”
— Al-Ahzab 33:45
The opening key to Chapter 18 is:
شَاهِدًا — WITNESS
Within the argument of this chapter, A WITNESS IS ONE WHO IS MADE TO BE WITNESSED.
Therefore, the question is not:
“What did the Prophet see?”
But:
WHAT CAN HUMAN BEINGS WITNESS IN THE PROPHET ﷺ?
The answer begins with:
HIS PERSON.
He was present before humanity.
He could be seen with the eyes.
He spoke.
He moved.
He gave.
He withheld.
He led.
He forgave.
He made decisions.
What became manifest through him was:
ACTIONS.
Through Actions, we recognise:
ATTRIBUTES.
And the collection of those Attributes is:
ESSENCE.
⸻
1. WITNESSING REQUIRES SOMETHING TO BECOME MANIFEST
If an attribute is only described, it remains a description.
But when that attribute becomes manifest through actions, human beings can witness it.
For example:
“WANT TO SEE GENEROSITY? LOOK AT ME.”
If someone’s actions genuinely demonstrate generosity, the attribute of generosity no longer remains only a story.
It has become manifest.
Likewise:
“WANT TO SEE COMPASSION? LOOK AT ME.”
If his Actions demonstrate compassion, the attribute of compassion can be recognised through him.
Therefore, witnessing is not a story about attributes.
Witnessing is:
ATTRIBUTES MANIFESTED THROUGH ACTIONS UPON A PERSON WHO CAN BE SEEN.
That is why:
ACTIONS EXPLAIN ATTRIBUTES.
⸻
2. THE COLLECTION OF ATTRIBUTES IS THE ESSENCE
One Action can explain one attribute.
Many Actions reveal many attributes.
When those attributes are gathered, their collection conveys:
meaning,
content,
direction of purpose,
and underlying reality.
That is:
ESSENCE.
Essence is not a figure.
Essence is the meaning or content gathered from the attributes.
Therefore, the sequence is:
ACTIONS → ATTRIBUTES → ESSENCE
What is visible to the eyes is Actions.
Through Actions, Attributes are recognised.
The collection of Attributes is the Essence.
⸻
3. ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
Now gather the entire description:
ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
Actions manifest Attributes.
Attributes are gathered as Essence.
Therefore, within this framework, Allah is:
THE DESCRIPTION OF ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS.
Do not search for something else behind those descriptions.
When human beings witness Actions, they recognise Attributes.
When Attributes are gathered, the Essence becomes known.
And Essence, Attributes and Actions are gathered under the name:
ALLAH.
⸻
4. THE RISALAH IS A CATEGORY OF DESCRIPTION
The Risalah is not a letter.
Not an object.
Not a file.
Not a USB drive.
The Risalah is:
A CATEGORY OF DESCRIPTION.
And:
ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS = THE CONTENT/DESCRIPTIONS EXPRESSED AS THE RISALAH.
The important word is:
AS.
It is not that Essence, Attributes and Actions exist inside a container called the Risalah.
Essence, Attributes and Actions are themselves the descriptions categorised:
AS THE RISALAH.
But descriptions do not have physical bodies that allow them to stand independently before humanity.
Therefore, the Risalah must have:
A BEARER.
⸻
5. THE GREAT KEY — كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ
Aishah رضي الله عنها was asked about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
She replied:
كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ
“HIS CHARACTER WAS THE QURAN.”
— Sahih Muslim, no. 746a
This is the great key to Chapter 18.
Aishah directed attention towards:
HIS CHARACTER.
Character does not exist outside its bearer.
Character becomes manifest through:
words,
choices,
actions,
silence,
the way one leads,
the way one shows compassion,
the way one upholds truth.
Therefore, what is expressed as the Risalah is demonstrated through its bearer.
⸻
6. EXPRESSED — IMPLICIT — MANIFESTED — WITNESSED
The relationship is as follows:
EXPRESSED
Essence, Attributes and Actions are expressed:
AS THE RISALAH.
IMPLICIT
Those descriptions are implicit within the bearer.
MANIFESTED
What is implicit becomes manifest through:
CHARACTER AND ACTIONS.
WITNESSED
When it becomes manifest, human beings can witness it.
Therefore:
WHAT IS IMPLICIT MUST BECOME MANIFEST IN ORDER TO BE WITNESSED.
Otherwise, it remains a story.
⸻
7. MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS THE BEARER PRESENTED TO BE WITNESSED
This is where the meaning of شَاهِدًا becomes important.
He ﷺ was present as a real person.
Human beings could observe his Actions.
Actions explain Attributes.
Attributes are gathered as Essence.
Therefore, the bearer of the Risalah is not only someone who says:
“Believe what I tell you.”
Instead, his entire conduct declares:
“LOOK AT WHAT BECOMES MANIFEST THROUGH ME.”
Want to see generosity?
LOOK AT HIS ACTIONS.
Want to see compassion?
LOOK AT HIS ACTIONS.
Want to recognise an attribute?
WITNESS THE ACTIONS.
This is where descriptions cease to remain stories.
They have been:
DEMONSTRATED.
⸻
8. THE POSTMAN MODEL IS INSUFFICIENT
A postman carries something that exists outside himself.
He collects a letter.
He delivers the letter.
Then his task is complete.
But the bearer of the Risalah is not like that.
Muhammad ﷺ is:
شَاهِدًا,
an exemplary model,
a bearer,
and the person through whom the Risalah becomes manifest.
Allah states:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.”
— Al-Ahzab 33:21
An example must be observable.
An example must be possible to follow.
An example must become manifest through Actions.
Therefore, he did not only convey descriptions.
He:
DEMONSTRATED THEM.
⸻
9. THE LESSON OF A FILM THAT IS UNFOLDING
Consider the lesson of a film.
A film has:
meaning,
characters,
attributes,
actions,
scenes,
and a journey.
A script that has not yet been performed remains a description.
When the actors move and act, what was implicit begins to:
BECOME MANIFEST.
Only then can the audience witness the meaning that previously existed within the description.
The same analogy applies to the Risalah.
What is expressed requires a bearer.
The bearer manifests it through Actions.
Actions make Attributes recognisable.
⸻
10. THE DIRECTOR ALSO ACTS IN ORDER TO BE KNOWN
Imagine a director who always remains behind the scenes.
The audience may recognise the results of his work.
But if the director wants his purpose and himself to become known within the journey of the film, he enters the story.
He also acts.
He speaks.
He takes action.
What was implicit within the director’s purpose now becomes manifest through his actions.
Therefore, the lesson is:
THE DIRECTOR ALSO ACTS IN ORDER TO BE KNOWN.
Not by only explaining his purpose.
But by:
DEMONSTRATING
that purpose through the unfolding story.
⸻
11. THE DIRECTOR — ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS
The director has:
PURPOSE.
This serves as an analogy for:
ESSENCE.
Purpose has characteristics and attributes.
These are:
ATTRIBUTES.
Attributes become manifest through actions.
These are:
ACTIONS.
Therefore, the audience moves through:
ACTIONS → ATTRIBUTES → ESSENCE
The audience sees the actions.
Through the actions, the attributes become known.
Through the collection of attributes, the purpose becomes known.
In this way, something implicit within the director becomes:
MANIFEST
and:
ABLE TO BE WITNESSED.
⸻
12. MUHAMMAD ﷺ DEMONSTRATES ALLAH’S RISALAH
Now return to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
He is the bearer who is visibly present.
Human beings witness his Actions.
Actions explain Attributes.
The collection of Attributes is the Essence.
And:
ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
Essence, Attributes and Actions are expressed:
AS THE RISALAH.
Therefore, Allah’s Risalah is demonstrated through its bearer.
That is why the great key remains:
كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ
“His character was the Quran.”
Character is what becomes manifest.
And what becomes manifest is what can be witnessed.
⸻
13. شَاهِدًا — TO BE WITNESSED
Now return to the opening verse:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا
Within the argument of Chapter 18:
شَاهِدًا = ONE WHO IS MADE TO BE WITNESSED.
What is witnessed is the bearer who is visibly present.
What becomes visible through the bearer is:
ACTIONS.
Actions explain:
ATTRIBUTES.
The collection of Attributes is:
ESSENCE.
And:
ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
Therefore, witnessing does not begin with stories about something unseen.
Witnessing begins when those descriptions:
BECOME MANIFEST THROUGH A PERSON WHO IS VISIBLY PRESENT.
⸻
THE RATIONAL FORMULA OF CHAPTER 18
MUHAMMAD ﷺ — THE BEARER WHO IS VISIBLY PRESENT
↓
شَاهِدًا — TO BE WITNESSED
↓
ACTIONS CAN BE SEEN
↓
ACTIONS EXPLAIN ATTRIBUTES
↓
THE COLLECTION OF ATTRIBUTES IS THE ESSENCE
↓
ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
↓
ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS ARE EXPRESSED AS THE RISALAH
↓
IMPLICIT WITHIN THE BEARER
↓
كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ
↓
MANIFESTED THROUGH CHARACTER AND ACTIONS
↓
ABLE TO BE WITNESSED
⸻
CLOSING
Chapter 18 begins with:
شَاهِدًا
Within this argument:
TO BE WITNESSED.
What is demonstrated is the person of the bearer.
What becomes manifest through the bearer is Actions.
Actions explain Attributes.
The collection of Attributes is the Essence.
And:
ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS = ALLAH
Those descriptions are expressed:
AS THE RISALAH.
Then what is implicit within the bearer becomes manifest through character.
That is why the great key given by Aishah رضي الله عنها is so fitting within this reading:
كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ
“His character was the Quran.”
Therefore, witnessing is no longer a story:
WANT TO SEE GENEROSITY? LOOK AT HIS ACTIONS.
WANT TO SEE COMPASSION? LOOK AT HIS ACTIONS.
When attributes have become manifest through Actions, they have been:
DEMONSTRATED
and:
CAN BE WITNESSED.
