Shahadah Is Testimony

Negation, Affirmation, the Message and the Bearer of the Message

The two declarations of Shahadah are not merely words to be memorised.

They are not merely repetition.

They are not merely sounds uttered by the tongue.

They are:

TESTIMONY.

When someone says:

أَشْهَدُ

it means:

I BEAR WITNESS.

Not:

“I have memorised it.”

Not:

“I repeat it.”

Not:

“I know how it sounds.”

But:

I BEAR WITNESS TO IT.

That is why memorisation cannot be equated with understanding.

MEMORISATION IS REPETITION.

A person can repeat something countless times without understanding it.

But understanding occurs when a person truly knows what is being negated, what is being affirmed, what is being witnessed, and who bears what is being witnessed.

This is where religion begins to come alive.

Because:

NO SPIRIT = DEATH.

If religion consists only of utterances, texts, laws and memorisation without understanding and testimony, it becomes merely a body without a spirit.

NEGATION BEFORE AFFIRMATION

Valid testimony must proceed through:

NEGATION → AFFIRMATION

First, negate.

Then, affirm.

What is false must be negated before what is true can be affirmed.

If someone proceeds directly to affirmation without negating an incorrect conception, they may merely be affirming something they have imagined themselves.

That is why, in testimony:

NEGATION PURIFIES.

Then:

AFFIRMATION CONFIRMS.

ALLAH IS NOT A THING

When Allah is mentioned, do not imagine a separate object.

Do not search for an appearance.

Do not search for a form.

Do not search for an unseen object.

Because:

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ

Therefore, Allah is not a شَيْءٌ that can be imagined as an object or a created being.

This is where the understanding of the following comes in:

ESSENCE

ATTRIBUTES

ACTIONS

But Essence, Attributes and Actions are not three separate things.

They are not three objects.

They are:

DESCRIPTIONS.

Or, in the terminology used within this framework:

رِسَالَة

THE MESSAGE.

WHAT DO ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS MEAN?

To understand this, consider the simplest example:

KICK

Kick is Essence.

A KICK

A kick is Attribute.

KICKING

Kicking is Action.

But ask one question:

Where is “kick”?

Where is “a kick”?

Where is “kicking”?

Can all three exist independently?

No.

Because:

KICK, A KICK AND KICKING ARE MERELY DESCRIPTIONS.

They are merely:

رِسَالَة

They are not a شَيْءٌ that exists independently.

They have no appearance of their own.

They have no physical body of their own.

They cannot manifest by themselves.

For them to become manifest, there must be:

A BEARER.

WITHOUT A BEARER, THERE IS NO MESSAGE THAT CAN BE WITNESSED

Consider this example:

RONALDO.

Ronaldo is:

THE KICKER.

He is the person who kicks.

When he kicks, only then can we witness:

Kick

A kick

and:

Kicking.

Without Ronaldo:

there is no kick that can be witnessed,

there is no kicking action that can be witnessed,

there is no act of kicking that can be witnessed.

Therefore:

WITHOUT RONALDO, THERE IS NO KICK.

WITHOUT RONALDO, THERE IS NO KICK TO BE MADE.

WITHOUT RONALDO, THERE IS NO KICKING.

Why?

Because kick, a kick and kicking are not objects.

They are:

DESCRIPTIONS.

رِسَالَة.

The one who makes those descriptions manifest is:

THE BEARER OF THE MESSAGE.

In this example:

RONALDO IS THE BEARER OF THE MESSAGE OF KICKING.

THE DOER MAKES THE MESSAGE MANIFEST

The doer is:

THE KICKER.

The kicker is the person who:

KICKS

with:

A KICK

and through that, we come to recognise:

KICK.

Therefore, the sequence is:

THE DOER

↓

ESSENCE

↓

ATTRIBUTE

↓

ACTION

Or, from the perspective of testimony:

ACTION

↓

ATTRIBUTE

↓

ESSENCE

↓

THE DOER

We do not see “kick” as an object.

We see someone kicking.

From that action, we understand:

there is a kick.

From that kick, we understand:

there is the essence of kicking.

And through all of these, we recognise:

THE KICKER.

Therefore, testimony always leads us back to:

WHO IS ITS BEARER?

ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS ARE THE MESSAGE

This is where an important point emerges.

Essence, Attributes and Actions are not things that exist independently.

They are:

DESCRIPTIONS.

رِسَالَة.

Therefore, when Allah’s Message is mentioned within this framework, it refers to:

THE DESCRIPTION OF ALLAH’S ESSENCE

THE DESCRIPTION OF ALLAH’S ATTRIBUTES

THE DESCRIPTION OF ALLAH’S ACTIONS

But descriptions alone are not enough.

Because a Message requires:

A BEARER OF THE MESSAGE.

Without a bearer, it remains merely a description.

With a bearer, it becomes something that can be witnessed.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY BEING WITNESSED?

What is witnessed is:

ALLAH’S ACTIONS.

Through the actions, we come to recognise:

ALLAH’S ATTRIBUTES.

Through the attributes, we come to recognise:

ALLAH’S ESSENCE.

Therefore:

ACTION → ATTRIBUTE → ESSENCE

But once again:

Essence, Attributes and Actions are themselves descriptions.

They must be borne.

They must be expressed.

They must be manifested through:

A BEARER.

That is why testimony does not stop at the terms:

Essence.

Attributes.

Actions.

The next question is:

WHO IS THE BEARER OF THE ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS?

This is where the second declaration of Shahadah becomes extremely important.

MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S MESSAGE

The Shahadah continues with:

وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ

Muhammad ﷺ is not merely an ordinary human being who conveys religious laws.

He is:

رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ

THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S MESSAGE.

And Allah’s Message, within this framework, is:

THE DESCRIPTION OF ALLAH’S ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS.

Therefore, the role of Muhammad ﷺ is not merely to convey words.

He is:

THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S DESCRIPTIONS.

Without the bearer of the Message, human beings merely hear terminology.

With the bearer of the Message, human beings can witness those descriptions come alive.

LIKE RONALDO AND KICKING

This analogy is very simple.

Without Ronaldo:

kick is merely a word.

a kick is merely a description.

kicking is merely a concept.

But when Ronaldo kicks, everything becomes manifest.

We can witness:

kick,

a kick,

kicking,

and ultimately:

THE KICKER.

Likewise, within the framework of testimony:

Essence,

Attributes,

Actions,

all of these are:

THE MESSAGE.

And for the Message to become manifest:

THERE MUST BE A BEARER OF THE MESSAGE.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF TESTIMONY

From this entire framework, testimony is explained through four pillars:

1. Affirming Allah’s Essence

2. Affirming Allah’s Attributes

3. Affirming Allah’s Actions

4. Affirming Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the bearer of Allah’s Message

But these four pillars are not merely a list to be memorised.

They must be understood as a single relationship.

Essence is described through attributes.

Attributes are expressed through actions.

Actions are witnessed through the bearer.

And the bearer of Allah’s Message is:

PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ.

MUHAMMAD THE UMMIY

Within this framework, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is also understood as:

UMMIY.

From:

أُمّ

meaning:

MOTHER / ORIGINAL / SOURCE.

Therefore:

أُمّ

أُمِّيّ

أُمَّة

express a living relationship.

The original.

The one connected to the original.

And the Ummah.

Therefore, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Ummiy, is:

THE ORIGINAL.

And the Ummah are those who:

ACKNOWLEDGE THE ORIGINAL

and:

REMAIN CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL.

LIKE A MOTHER AND HER CHILD

A mother may love her children very deeply.

But what if a child says:

“She is not my mother”?

The original relationship still exists.

But the acknowledgement has been lost.

Within this framework, the same applies to the relationship between the Ummah and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Ummiy.

A person may say:

“I belong to the Ummah of Muhammad.”

But if they do not acknowledge him as:

UMMIY

THE ORIGINAL

THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S MESSAGE

then that relationship exists in name only.

The Ummah is not merely a label.

The Ummah is:

A CONNECTION.

BEARING WITNESS TO ONESELF

Testimony ultimately returns to oneself.

Within this framework, the self is:

MUHAMMAD THE CLONE

who remains connected to:

PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ THE UMMIY

as:

THE ORIGINAL.

The self does not stand independently.

It remains connected.

It receives.

It bears the relationship.

And its original is Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as:

THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S MESSAGE.

That Message consists of:

ALLAH’S ESSENCE

ATTRIBUTES

ACTIONS

as descriptions.

THE UMMAH IS A RELATIONSHIP, NOT A LABEL

A person does not become part of the Ummah merely because they were born into a Muslim family.

Not merely because they claim to belong to the Ummah.

Not merely because they can memorise the Prophet’s name.

Within this framework, being part of the Ummah means:

ACKNOWLEDGING THE ORIGINAL.

REMAINING CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL.

RECEIVING THE MESSAGE FROM THE ORIGINAL.

Therefore, the “Ummah of Muhammad” is a living relationship.

Not merely the name of a group.

AWAKENING BEGINS IN THIS WORLD

When it is said that the Ummah of Muhammad will be raised first, resurrection within this framework is not limited to what happens after death.

Awakening begins in this world.

Awakening from:

memorisation to understanding.

text to spirit.

repetition to testimony.

a name to a relationship.

a claim to a connection.

Therefore, the Ummah that truly remains connected to the original is an Ummah whose:

CONSCIOUSNESS HAS AWAKENED.

TEXT WITHOUT SPIRIT IS DEAD

If religion consists only of:

utterances,

books,

laws,

definitions,

and memorisation,

but does not lead to understanding, then it becomes:

TEXT WITHOUT SPIRIT.

And:

NO SPIRIT = DEATH.

That is why someone can memorise a great deal yet still fail to understand.

They can repeat a great deal yet fail to bear witness.

They can mention Essence, Attributes and Actions every day yet still not know:

WHO IS THEIR BEARER?

This is where religion can become a body without a spirit.

MEMORISATION IS REPETITION

Memorisation is:

REPETITION.

Understanding is:

SEEING THE RELATIONSHIP.

Testimony is:

AFFIRMING WHAT HAS BEEN UNDERSTOOD.

Therefore, the journey of a living religion is not:

MEMORISE → REPEAT → MEMORISE → REPEAT.

Rather, it is:

NEGATION

↓

UNDERSTANDING

↓

AFFIRMATION

↓

TESTIMONY

CONCLUSION

Shahadah is:

TESTIMONY.

Testimony is not merely uttering:

أَشْهَدُ

but truly knowing what is being witnessed.

What is witnessed is:

ACTION.

Through action, we come to recognise:

ATTRIBUTE.

Through attribute, we come to recognise:

ESSENCE.

But Essence, Attributes and Actions are not objects.

They are merely:

DESCRIPTIONS.

رِسَالَة.

Like:

KICK

A KICK

KICKING

all of which become manifest only when there is:

RONALDO

THE KICKER.

Therefore:

WITHOUT A BEARER, THE MESSAGE CANNOT BE WITNESSED.

Likewise:

ALLAH’S ESSENCE

ATTRIBUTES

ACTIONS

are Allah’s Message.

And:

MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS THE BEARER OF ALLAH’S MESSAGE.

He is:

UMMIY.

THE ORIGINAL.

And the Ummah are those who:

ACKNOWLEDGE AND REMAIN CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL.

Therefore, the entire process of testimony unfolds through one relationship:

NEGATION → AFFIRMATION → TESTIMONY

ACTION → ATTRIBUTE → ESSENCE

MESSAGE → BEARER OF THE MESSAGE

UMM → UMMIY → UMMAH

ORIGINAL → CONNECTION → UMMAH

MEMORISATION → UNDERSTANDING → AWAKENING

Because without spirit, text is dead.

Without understanding, memorisation is merely repetition.

Without a bearer, the Message is merely a description.

And without testimony:

SHAHADAH REMAINS ONLY ON THE TONGUE.
