Nur Muhammad: The Lamp, the Oil and the Light That Illuminates the Universe

October 8, 2026By SIHULK7 min read

The confusion surrounding Nur Muhammad begins when its sequence is reversed.

Some understand it as:

Nur came first → then became Muhammad ﷺ.

Yet the Quranic parable presents a clearer sequence:

Oil → ignited → the lamp gives light.

Therefore, the light does not precede the lamp.

A more accurate arrangement is:

Muhammad ﷺ as the bearer → carries the Light of Allah → when ignited and manifested → radiates as Nur Muhammad.

⸻

## 1. THE FOUNDATIONAL VERSE — AN-NUR 24:35

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His Light is like a niche containing a lamp. The lamp is within glass. The glass is as though it were a brilliant star. It is lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west. Its oil would almost shine even if untouched by fire. Light upon light.”

— An-Nur 24:35

This verse provides a complete sequence:

OIL ↓ IGNITED ↓ THE LAMP BURNS ↓ LIGHT RADIATES

This is where the concept of Nur Muhammad must be properly understood.

⸻

## 2. THE OIL = PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ

The olive oil in the parable represents the bearer.

Oil appears ordinary.

Likewise, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is outwardly a human being.

Yet this is no ordinary oil:

مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ

“From a blessed olive tree.”

And:

“Its oil would almost shine.”

Therefore, the oil carries something already contained within itself.

In our interpretation:

OIL = PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ

He is the bearer.

⸻

## 3. THE LIGHT WITHIN THE OIL = THE LIGHT OF ALLAH

What is contained within the oil?

The verse states that the oil itself would almost shine.

Therefore, the light contained within the oil can be understood as:

THE LIGHT OF ALLAH

That is:

ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS

The Light of Allah here is not a ball of light, a figure or a physical substance.

It is the explanation of the Essence, Attributes and Actions contained within the bearer.

Therefore:

OIL = Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

THE LIGHT WITHIN THE OIL = The Light of Allah = Essence + Attributes + Actions

This is the content carried by the Prophet ﷺ.

⸻

## 4. CLASSICAL TAFSIR — MUHAMMAD ﷺ AND THE OIL THAT ALMOST SHINES

Ibn Kathir quotes Ka‘b al-Ahbar concerning the phrase:

That Muhammad ﷺ would almost make it clear to people that he was a Prophet even before speaking, just as the oil would almost shine even before being touched by fire.

The meaning closely resembles this illustration:

The bearer already possesses the attributes that allow the light to become manifest.

Not light first, followed by the bearer.

Rather:

THE BEARER FIRST — WITH THE LIGHT CONTAINED WITHIN HIM.

⸻

## 5. THE GLASS = A TRANSPARENT BARRIER

The verse states:

“The lamp is within glass.”

Then:

“The glass is as though it were a brilliant star.”

Glass is a barrier.

But that barrier is transparent.

It does not darken the light.

It protects the flame while allowing the light to pass through.

This corresponds to the function of the bearer:

The bearer does not conceal the content.

The bearer manifests what is carried.

⸻

## 6. “IGNITED” = ACTIONS

The verse states:

“Is ignited.”

Before ignition, the oil already exists.

Its attributes already exist.

Its light is already contained within it.

But when it is ignited, what was contained becomes manifest.

This is where:

ACTIONS begin.

Therefore, the arrangement is:

ESSENCE = meaning and substance

ATTRIBUTES = inherent capacities

ACTIONS = ignition / manifestation

BEARER = Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

When Actions occur, the light previously contained begins to radiate outward.

⸻

## 7. THE LIGHT OF THE LAMP = NUR MUHAMMAD

This is the most important point.

There is a difference between:

THE LIGHT WITHIN THE OIL

and

THE LIGHT OF THE LAMP.

The light within the oil = The Light of Allah = Essence + Attributes + Actions contained within the bearer

The light of the lamp = The light that radiates after ignition = Nur Muhammad

Therefore:

NUR MUHAMMAD = THE LIGHT THAT EMANATES FROM MUHAMMAD ﷺ AS THE BEARER OF THE LIGHT OF ALLAH.

This is not a theory that Nur existed first and then transformed into Muhammad.

Instead:

MUHAMMAD ﷺ CARRIES THE LIGHT OF ALLAH, AND FROM HIM NUR MUHAMMAD RADIATES.

⸻

## 8. AL-AHZAB 33:46 — THE PROPHET ﷺ AS AN ILLUMINATING LAMP

The Quran states:

“And as one who calls to Allah by His permission, and as an illuminating lamp.”

— Al-Ahzab 33:46

The words:

سِرَاجًا = lamp

مُّنِيرًا = illuminating

This verse reinforces the earlier arrangement.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is:

AN ILLUMINATING LAMP.

Therefore, Nur Muhammad is not something separate from him.

It is the light that emanates from that lamp.

⸻

## 9. AL-MA’IDAH 5:15 — NUR AND MUHAMMAD ﷺ

The Quran states:

“Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.”

— Al-Ma’idah 5:15

Al-Tabari interprets:

“What is meant by the light is Muhammad ﷺ.”

This is important.

Muhammad ﷺ is described as Nur because he is the bearer who illuminates.

Therefore, “Nur Muhammad” does not need to be understood as a being of light that preceded him.

Instead, Muhammad ﷺ becomes Nur because he:

carries the Light of Allah

and

radiates it to humanity.

⸻

## 10. UMMĪ = THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF ILLUMINATION

Al-A‘raf 7:157 mentions:

“The Ummī Prophet.”

It then states:

“And they follow the light that was sent down with him.”

Here, there is a clear distinction between:

UMMĪ = the bearer / original source

and

NUR = what is carried with him

Therefore, Ummī is not separate from the illumination.

He is the original bearer of the light.

⸻

## 11. STREAMING BEGINS WHEN THE LAMP IS IGNITED

When the oil is ignited, the light does not remain inside the lamp.

It radiates outward.

This is the most accurate analogy for streaming.

IGNITION = STREAMING BEGINS.

The light contained within the oil becomes the light radiating from the lamp.

Therefore:

THE LIGHT OF ALLAH = contained within the bearer

↓ ignited

NUR MUHAMMAD = radiates from the bearer

↓ continues to spread

UMMAH / UNIVERSE = receives illumination

⸻

## 12. RUH = DATA / SCRIPT WITHIN THE STREAMING

This chapter connects directly with the chapter on Ruh.

We have established:

RUH = DATA / SCRIPT

Therefore, Nur Muhammad can be understood as the light or flow of illumination that carries that data and script.

The arrangement is:

UMMĪ / MUHAMMAD ﷺ ↓ THE LIGHT OF ALLAH — ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS ↓ IGNITED ↓ NUR MUHAMMAD ↓ RUH — DATA / SCRIPT ↓ ANGELS — MEDIUM OF TRANSMISSION ↓ PHYSICAL BODY — RECEIVING DEVICE

The physical body does not create the data.

The physical body receives.

Likewise, a device does not create the server.

It receives streaming from the source.

⸻

## 13. HADITH — NUR REACHES THE RECEIVER

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ خَلَقَ خَلْقَهُ فِي ظُلْمَةٍ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ نُورِهِ فَمَنْ أَصَابَهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ النُّورِ اهْتَدَى وَمَنْ أَخْطَأَهُ ضَلَّ

“Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created His creation in darkness, then cast upon them some of His Light. Whoever was reached by that Light was guided, and whoever missed it went astray.”

— Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, no. 2642

This Hadith illustrates the movement:

NUR → REACHES → RECEIVER

This is the function of streaming in our analogy.

The light does not stop at its source.

It reaches those who receive it.

⸻

## 14. HADITH — MUHAMMAD ﷺ BEFORE ADAM’S PHYSICAL BODY WAS COMPLETE

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked:

مَتَى وَجَبَتْ لَكَ النُّبُوَّةُ؟

“When was Prophethood decreed for you?”

He replied:

“When Adam was still between Ruh and the physical body.”

— Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, no. 3609

This Hadith does not state that Nur Muhammad transformed into the physical body of Muhammad.

It indicates that the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ had already been decreed before Adam’s physical body was completed.

In our analogy:

The data/script was already available before the device was ready.

When the device becomes available, the data/script begins to operate.

⸻

## 15. LIGHT UPON LIGHT

Finally, the verse states:

نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ

“Light upon light.”

Within the arrangement we have constructed:

THE LIGHT WITHIN THE OIL

= The Light of Allah = Essence + Attributes + Actions

meets

THE LIGHT OF THE LAMP

= Nur Muhammad = The light that radiates after ignition

Therefore:

THE LIGHT OF ALLAH → THROUGH MUHAMMAD ﷺ → RADIATES AS NUR MUHAMMAD

This is:

Light upon light.

Not two unseen entities.

Not two balls of light.

But:

light that is contained

+

light that becomes manifest.

⸻

## CONCLUSION

An-Nur 24:35 provides a very clear arrangement:

OIL = Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

THE LIGHT WITHIN THE OIL = The Light of Allah = Essence + Attributes + Actions

GLASS = A transparent barrier that does not obstruct illumination

IGNITION = Actions / streaming begins

THE LIGHT OF THE LAMP = Nur Muhammad

LIGHT UPON LIGHT = The Light of Allah carried by Muhammad ﷺ, then manifested and radiated as Nur Muhammad.

Therefore, the actual sequence is not:

NUR → MUHAMMAD ﷺ

But:

MUHAMMAD ﷺ

carries

THE LIGHT OF ALLAH

which is

ESSENCE + ATTRIBUTES + ACTIONS

and when ignited,

RADIATES AS NUR MUHAMMAD.

From here, that illumination continues to flow throughout the universe:

UMMĪ → LIGHT OF ALLAH → ACTIONS → NUR MUHAMMAD → RUH/DATA → ANGELS → PHYSICAL BODY/RECEIVER

Muhammad ﷺ is the bearer.

The Light of Allah is the content he carries.

Nur Muhammad is the light that radiates from the bearer.

That is the lamp, the oil and the light that illuminates the universe.
