Chapter 8 — Barzakh: Unresolved Questions

After the physical body is left behind and the FINAL SYNC takes place, human beings no longer have the worldly tools to:
run away,
distract themselves,
delay questions,
build a new profile.
What remains is:
THE FINAL PROFILE.
This is where we come to understand BARZAKH.
Allah says:
وَمِن وَرَائِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
“And before them is a barzakh until the Day they are resurrected.”
— Al-Mu’minūn 23:100
بَرْزَخ — barzakh
carries the meaning:
a barrier, a separation, a boundary between two states.
Therefore, Barzakh should not immediately be confined to the image of a hole in the ground.
It is an INTERMEDIATE STATE.
⸻
1. THE PHYSICAL BODY HAS BEEN LEFT BEHIND
Before death:
PHYSICAL BODY = worldly terminal.
Through the physical body, human beings can:
see,
hear,
move,
seek information,
make choices,
correct mistakes.
After death, that terminal is left behind.
Therefore, the opportunity to change the profile through worldly life has been closed.
What is now faced is:
WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN FORMED.
⸻
2. BARZAKH = BARRIER
Imagine a doorway between two spaces.
A person has left one space but has not yet entered the next state.
Between them lies:
BARZAKH.
Within our reading, what becomes the barrier?
WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED WITHIN THE SELF.
Questions remain unanswered.
Truth has not yet been accepted.
Assumptions have not yet become certainty.
Mistakes have not yet been resolved.
Conflict remains stored within the self.
Therefore:
BARZAKH = THE INTERMEDIATE STATE THAT EXPOSES WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED.
⸻
3. MUNKAR = QUESTIONING
The hadith mentions:
أَتَاهُ مَلَكَانِ … يُقَالُ لِأَحَدِهِمَا الْمُنْكَرُ وَالْآخَرُ النَّكِيرُ
“Two angels come to him … one of them is called Munkar and the other Nakir.”
Then the person is questioned.
Within our mapping:
MUNKAR = THE QUESTION.
But this questioning should not merely be imagined as a verbal question-and-answer session like a school examination.
The question touches upon:
WHAT DO YOU TRULY BELIEVE?
Not what the tongue is capable of memorising.
⸻
4. MEMORISATION IS NOT THE SAME AS AN ANSWER
A person can memorise:
who is your Lord,
what is your religion,
who is the bearer of your Message.
But memorisation is merely data on the surface.
The real question is:
HAVE YOU WITNESSED IT?
If the answer exists only on the tongue but has not become a state within the self, then memorisation has not yet resolved the question.
That is why the Quran says:
يُثَبِّتُ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ
“Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Akhirah.”
— Ibrāhīm 14:27
What is required is:
FIRMNESS.
Not memorisation that becomes unstable when tested.
⸻
5. NAKIR = PRESSURE BECAUSE THE ANSWER REMAINS UNRESOLVED
If a question arises but the self has no answer:
conflict emerges.
QUESTION
↓
NO ANSWER
↓
DOUBT
↓
FEAR
↓
PRESSURE
Within our mapping:
NAKIR = PRESSURE.
Therefore, Munkar and Nakir become a pair of functions:
MUNKAR → QUESTIONING
NAKIR → PRESSURE WHEN THE QUESTION REMAINS UNANSWERED
⸻
6. HUMAN BEINGS ALREADY EXPERIENCE THIS
Observe yourself during life.
When a major question remains unanswered, a person may:
be unable to sleep,
feel restless,
feel afraid,
think about it repeatedly,
search for an answer.
The question itself does not yet cause torment.
What creates the pressure is:
HAVING NO ANSWER.
When the true answer is found:
“Ah! Now I understand.”
The pressure can disappear.
This demonstrates the relationship:
QUESTION → ANSWER → TRANQUILLITY
or:
QUESTION → NO ANSWER → PRESSURE
⸻
7. JIBRIL RESOLVES MUNKAR
Here we return to the leader of the network of angels:
JIBRIL.
Allah says:
نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
“The trustworthy Ruh brought it down upon your qalb.”
— Ash-Shu‘arā’ 26:193–194
Jibril brings:
TRUTH.
Munkar brings:
THE QUESTION.
When truth has reached the qalb:
QUESTION + TRUTH = ANSWER.
Therefore, the function of Jibril subdues the conflict arising from Munkar and Nakir.
This is why, within our arrangement:
JIBRIL BECOMES THE LEADER OF THE NETWORK.
Truth organises the other functions.
⸻
8. FROM ASSUMPTION TO CERTAINTY
Allah says:
إِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا
“Indeed, assumption cannot replace the truth in any way.”
— Yūnus 10:36
As long as a person says:
“I suppose…”
“Maybe…”
“People say…”
“My teacher says…”
“I just follow…”
there is still room for questions.
But when a person KNOWS AND WITNESSES, assumption is replaced by certainty.
Therefore, the journey of knowledge is:
ASSUMPTION
↓
QUESTIONING
↓
SEARCHING
↓
EVIDENCE
↓
WITNESSING
↓
CERTAINTY
⸻
9. A BELIEVER IS NOT PRESSURED BY A QUESTION THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN RESOLVED
If a student truly understands the answer, an examination does not create a new answer.
It merely reveals what is already known.
The same applies to a believer.
If throughout life they have:
searched,
evaluated,
understood,
witnessed,
accepted the truth,
then questioning does not produce conflict.
The answer is already within their profile.
Allah says:
يُثَبِّتُ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ
“Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word.”
Therefore:
THE QUESTION EXISTS,
BUT THE CONFLICT DOES NOT.
⸻
10. BYPASSING BARZAKH
Here, the meaning of BYPASSING BARZAKH within this model must be precise.
It does not mean that the word Barzakh is erased from the revealed texts.
Barzakh still means a boundary/barrier.
But if that which forms the barrier has already been resolved:
WHAT IS LEFT TO HOLD THE PERSON BACK?
A believer who has already become firm upon the truth is not held back by the conflict of questioning.
MUNKAR → THERE IS AN ANSWER
NAKIR → THERE IS NO PRESSURE
MALIK → DOES NOT TAKE CONTROL
RIDWAN → TRANQUILLITY
Therefore:
THE BELIEVER BYPASSES THE PHASE OF CONFLICT IN BARZAKH.
⸻
11. MALIK AND RIDWAN
If the question remains unresolved, pressure can develop into torment within the self.
Within our mapping:
MUNKAR
= questioning
↓
NAKIR
= pressure
↓
MALIK
= torment that takes control
But if the question has been resolved through truth:
JIBRIL
= truth
↓
ANSWER
↓
CERTAINTY
↓
RIDWAN
= bliss and tranquillity
Therefore, the two paths can be illustrated as:
QUESTION → NO ANSWER → PRESSURE → TORMENT
or:
QUESTION → TRUTH → ANSWER → CERTAINTY → TRANQUILLITY
⸻
12. RESOLVE THE QUESTIONS DURING LIFE
This is the importance of the Worldly Realm.
Do not wait until the physical body has been left behind to search for answers.
For now, there are still:
eyes with which to see,
ears with which to hear,
reason with which to evaluate,
a qalb with which to understand,
time to search,
opportunities to make corrections.
Therefore, every question resolved through truth is:
ONE BARRIER THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN BROKEN DOWN.
⸻
SUMMARY OF CHAPTER 8
BARZAKH
= barrier / separation
MUNKAR
= questioning
NAKIR
= pressure when the question remains unanswered
JIBRIL
= truth that brings the answer
CERTAINTY
= the question has been resolved through evidence and witnessing
MALIK
= torment when conflict takes control
RIDWAN
= bliss when truth produces tranquillity
Therefore, the flow is:
ASSUMPTION
↓
MUNKAR — QUESTION
↓
JIBRIL — TRUTH
↓
ANSWER
↓
CERTAINTY
↓
RIDWAN — TRANQUILLITY
But if truth is not obtained:
MUNKAR — QUESTION
↓
NO ANSWER
↓
NAKIR — PRESSURE
↓
MALIK — TORMENT
That is why you should not fear questions.
FEAR WHEN THE QUESTION STILL HAS NO ANSWER.
Resolve the questions while the streaming is still running.
Because after the FINAL SYNC, human beings face the profile they themselves have formed.
