Allah Above the ‘Arsh: When the Logic of Tawhid Puts an End to the Debate

الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ
“Ar-Rahman established Himself above the ‘Arsh.”
This verse is brief.
Yet people engage in prolonged debates because they memorise without understanding the categories being discussed.
One side seeks to defend the statement:
“Allah is above.”
The other side seeks to defend the statement:
“Allah is not confined to a place.”
They debate above, below, place, direction and space.
But both sides often become trapped in the same mistake:
THEY FIRST ASSUME THAT ALLAH IS “SOMETHING”.
Once Allah is regarded as “something”, all these questions arise:
Where is that thing located?
Above or below?
Near or far?
Within space or outside space?
The real problem begins even before the discussion of the ‘Arsh.
⸻
ALLAH IS NOT “SOMETHING”
لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ
شَيْء — shay’ — something.
Within this framework of Tawhid, Allah is not placed in the category of something that can be imagined, measured, located or assigned a direction.
Allah is understood in terms of:
ESSENCE
ATTRIBUTES
ACTIONS
Not a thing.
Not an object.
Not a physical body.
Not something whose position in space needs to be found.
Therefore, when someone asks:
“Where is Allah?”
the question itself begins with the wrong category.
Because only physical things need to be located somewhere.
⸻
THE ‘ARSH IS NOT A QUESTION OF A CHAIR
عَرْش
Its letters are:
ع — ‘Ain
ر — Ra’
ش — Shin
Within this framework, the ‘Arsh is understood as:
THE HIGHEST LEVEL
The highest level of position.
The highest level of authority.
The highest level of governance.
The highest level of administration.
Therefore, the question is not:
“What kind of object is the ‘Arsh?”
But:
“What is the highest position within the entire order of governance?”
⸻
THE ANALOGY OF THE PRESIDENT
We say:
“The President occupies the highest level of government in America.”
Is the President a physical body?
No.
President is an office.
It refers to:
position,
authority,
rank,
a governing function.
The body of the person holding that office may be at home, on an aircraft, in a hospital or overseas.
But the position of President remains at the highest level of government.
Therefore, the phrase:
“above”
does not necessarily refer to a physical location.
It can refer to:
POSITION.
The same applies to the ‘Arsh.
⸻
SO WHAT DOES “ALLAH ABOVE THE ‘ARSH” MEAN?
If:
Allah = Essence, Attributes and Actions
and:
‘Arsh = the highest level of position and governance
then:
ALLAH ABOVE THE ‘ARSH
is not a description of:
“one thing being above another thing.”
It is a description of:
ESSENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND ACTIONS OCCUPYING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ALL GOVERNANCE.
Simple.
No chair is needed.
No space is needed.
No direction is needed.
There is no need to imagine something sitting in a particular place.
⸻
WHY DOES THE DEBATE NEVER END?
Because people memorise terminology but fail to understand the categories.
They memorise:
فَوْق — above
تَحْت — below
مَكَان — place
جِهَة — direction
عَرْش — ‘Arsh
اِسْتَوَى — istiwā’
Yet they continue to think within the framework of:
OBJECT + SPACE + LOCATION
Then one side says:
“Above.”
The other side says:
“Not a place.”
But both still assume that they are discussing something that needs to be located.
That is why the debate becomes so prolonged.
⸻
MEMORISATION CANNOT RESOLVE A PROBLEM CAUSED BY MISUNDERSTANDING
If the mistake lies in the way of thinking, adding more memorised material will not necessarily resolve it.
In fact, sometimes more memorisation simply produces more material for debate.
One revealed text is answered with another.
One book is answered with another book.
One school of thought is answered with another school of thought.
But the original category is never examined.
This is the fundamental difference between:
MEMORISING
and
UNDERSTANDING.
A person who memorises knows the words.
A person who understands knows what is being discussed.
⸻
THIS IS WHERE THE ROLE OF A TAWHID TEACHER WHO PROVIDES SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE COMES IN
A Tawhid teacher does not merely give students a list to memorise.
The teacher corrects their way of seeing.
The teacher teaches people to distinguish:
Essence from a thing.
Attributes from objects.
Actions from physical bodies.
Position from location.
Level from place.
Authority from geography.
When the categories become clear, many questions that once seemed complicated simply fall away.
⸻
DIRECTION ALSO BECOMES A FALSE PROBLEM
جِهَة — jihah — direction.
Direction is relevant only when there are objects in space.
Above.
Below.
Left.
Right.
In front.
Behind.
All of these describe relationships between things in space.
If Allah is not a thing or an object in space, then asking:
“In which direction is Allah?”
is like asking:
“What colour is an official position?”
The question uses the wrong category.
An official position has no colour.
A rank has no weight.
Authority has no length.
Likewise, Essence, Attributes and Actions cannot be forced into the category of physical things.
⸻
THE PROBLEM IS RESOLVED WHEN THE LOGIC IS CORRECTED
The framework is very simple:
1. Allah is not a thing.
2. Allah is not an object.
3. Allah is not placed in the category of “something” whose location must be found.
4. Allah is understood in terms of Essence, Attributes and Actions.
5. The ‘Arsh is understood as the highest level of position and governance.
6. Therefore, “above the ‘Arsh” is language describing the highest position, not a physical location.
Resolved.
⸻
PROLONGED DEBATES ARISE FROM USING THE WRONG CATEGORY
If someone mistakes the office of President for a physical body, they will ask:
“If the President is above the government, where is his body sitting?”
The confusion in that question is obvious.
Because the “President” being discussed is the office, not the body of the person holding it.
The same applies when people imagine Allah as a thing.
They ask:
“If Allah is above the ‘Arsh, what is His form?”
“How far away is He?”
“Where is His location?”
All these questions arise because they have first turned Tawhid into geography.
⸻
TAWHID IS NOT GEOGRAPHY
Tawhid is not the study of finding Allah’s coordinates.
Tawhid is not the study of determining whether Allah is above, below, to the right or to the left.
Tawhid is the knowledge of understanding:
ESSENCE
ATTRIBUTES
ACTIONS
When Tawhid is turned into a debate about location, it indicates that people have reduced what is not a physical thing to the category of physical things.
⸻
THE PROBLEM OF “ALLAH ABOVE THE ‘ARSH” IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE REVEALED TEXT.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT PEOPLE IMAGINE ALLAH AS SOMETHING AND THEN BEGIN SEARCHING FOR A PLACE FOR HIM.
Yet when it is understood that:
Allah is Essence, Attributes and Actions.
The ‘Arsh is the highest level of position and governance.
the question immediately becomes simple.
MEMORISATION SEES THE WORDS.
UNDERSTANDING SEES THE CATEGORIES.
WHEN THE CATEGORIES ARE CORRECT, THE DEBATE COMES TO AN END.
