ISLAM

Many people declare:
“I am Sunni.”
And consider the matter settled.
As though carrying the name Sunni is enough to prove that someone belongs to:
Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah.
Yet the term itself demands proof.
SUNNAH — whose pattern is being followed?
JAMA‘AH — to whom is the self connected?
If Sunnah becomes only a name, the pattern is lost.
If Jama‘ah becomes only a crowd, the connection is lost.
If there is a Jama‘ah but no imam, who is being followed?
If there is an imam but the connection to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been severed, to whom does that connection lead?
⸻
1. THE HADITH ITSELF PROVIDES THE KEY TO THE ONE GROUP
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
وَتَفْتَرِقُ أُمَّتِي عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً كُلُّهُمْ فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا مِلَّةً وَاحِدَةً
“My Ummah will divide into seventy-three groups; all of them will be in the Fire except one group.”
The Companions asked:
“Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied:
“What I and my Companions are upon.”
— Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, no. 2641
Notice.
He did not answer with the name of an organisation.
He did not provide a logo.
He did not identify a race.
He did not give the name of a modern school of thought.
The key is:
“What I am upon.”
This is the Sunnah.
The pattern of the Prophet ﷺ.
And:
“And my Companions.”
There are those who received from him.
There is a connection.
⸻
2. ANOTHER NARRATION STATES: “IT IS AL-JAMA‘AH”
In another narration concerning the division of the Ummah:
وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْمِلَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ ثِنْتَانِ وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ
“Indeed, this community will divide into seventy-three groups; seventy-two will be in the Fire and one in Paradise, and it is al-Jama‘ah.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 4597
Now two texts come together:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
And:
The pattern of the Prophet ﷺ.
And the Jama‘ah.
This is why the term:
AHL AL-SUNNAH WA AL-JAMA‘AH
cannot be understood as an empty name.
⸻
3. SUNNAH = THE PATTERN OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ
Allah states:
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example to follow.”
— Al-Ahzab 33:21
The key is:
A pattern.
A model.
An example to follow.
Therefore, a person of the Sunnah is someone who allows themselves to be shaped according to the pattern of Muhammad ﷺ.
⸻
4. IF YOU LOVE ALLAH — FOLLOW MUHAMMAD ﷺ
Allah states:
“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you.”
— Ali ‘Imran 3:31
The key is:
FOLLOW ME.
Not:
“Simply make a claim.”
Not:
“Simply memorise a name.”
But follow.
Therefore, the Sunnah requires replacing one’s own pattern.
⸻
5. LOVE FOR THE PROPHET MUST EXCEED LOVE FOR ONE’S OWN PROFILE
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child and all humanity.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 15 — Sahih Muslim, no. 44
Love has consequences.
If one’s own pattern conflicts with the pattern of Muhammad ﷺ:
one’s own pattern must give way.
This is the meaning of “cloning Muhammad” within the analogy of this chapter:
not cloning DNA,
not cloning the face,
not cloning the body.
But:
THE PROFILE OF HIS PATTERN.
Truthfulness.
Trustworthiness.
Character.
The way of carrying the Risalah.
The way of submitting.
The way of leading.
The way of being a servant.
⸻
6. THE CALF — DO NOT STOP AT THE IDOL
Allah states:
“…You have wronged yourselves by taking the calf, so repent to your Creator and kill yourselves…”
— Al-Baqarah 2:54
The outward meaning of the verse concerns the Children of Israel and the calf.
But the lesson should not be confined to the calf idol.
The Quran itself uses livestock as an illustration of human beings who do not use their reason:
إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا كَالْأَنْعَامِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا
“They are only like livestock; rather, they are even further astray.”
— Al-Furqan 25:44
And:
“They are like livestock; rather, they are even further astray.”
— Al-A‘raf 7:179
This is not an insult to cattle.
A cow is not wrong for being a cow.
Animals act according to their natural disposition.
The criticism is directed at human beings who have been given reason but refuse to use it.
Therefore, the calf becomes a mirror:
Do not live with an ignorant profile, following without understanding.
⸻
7. “KILL YOURSELVES” — REMOVE THE OLD PROFILE
This must not be understood as an instruction to harm our physical bodies today.
Within the reflective interpretation of this chapter:
what must be “killed” is:
ego,
the ignorant profile,
arrogance,
the desire to make oneself the centre,
and the personal pattern that refuses to submit to the Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ.
It is not the physical body that must be discarded.
It is the old profile that must be released.
⸻
8. AL-BAQARAH 2:254 — GIVE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE
Allah states:
“O you who believe, spend from what We have provided you before a Day comes in which there will be no trade, friendship or intercession…”
— Al-Baqarah 2:254
The outward meaning is:
أَنفِقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاكُم
Spend from what you have been provided.
But when read alongside the journey of “releasing the self”, another lesson emerges:
What is the hardest thing to give away?
Wealth?
Or:
ONE’S OWN EGO?
A person can give money while still keeping themselves at the centre.
They can give charity while still saying:
“I.”
“My opinion.”
“My name.”
“My position.”
Therefore, the highest form of giving on the journey of following Muhammad ﷺ is:
SURRENDERING THE SELF.
⸻
9. A MORE DIRECT TEXT: SOME PEOPLE “SELL THEMSELVES”
Allah states:
“And among humanity are those who sell themselves seeking the pleasure of Allah.”
— Al-Baqarah 2:207
Notice:
“Themselves.”
This provides a powerful basis for understanding:
GIVING THE SELF.
Not killing the body.
But surrendering the ego’s claim of ownership over the self.
⸻
10. ALLAH “PURCHASES” THE SELF AND WEALTH
Allah states:
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their selves and their wealth…”
— At-Tawbah 9:111
Notice the order:
Their selves.
Then:
Their wealth.
Therefore, do not restrict giving to money alone.
There is something even closer:
THE SELF.
And that is the hardest thing to release.
⸻
11. THE SUNNAH REQUIRES THE SELF TO BE SURRENDERED TO THE PROPHET’S PATTERN ﷺ
Once the self has been released from its position at the centre, whose pattern takes its place?
Muhammad ﷺ.
That is why:
“Follow me.”
And the hadith concerning division states:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
“What I and my Companions are upon.”
This is Ahl al-Sunnah.
Not those who shout “Sunni” the loudest.
But those who are most serious about removing their own patterns in order to adopt the pattern of Muhammad ﷺ.
⸻
12. THE HADITH THAT DIRECTLY MENTIONS THE SUNNAH
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ الرَّاشِدِينَ تَمَسَّكُوا بِهَا وَعَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ
“So hold firmly to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Hold firmly to it and cling to it with your molar teeth.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 4607 — Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, no. 2676
Why did he say this?
The hadith itself states:
فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا
“He will see much disagreement.”
When many paths emerge:
RETURN TO THE SUNNAH.
⸻
13. WAL-JAMA‘AH: HOLD ONTO THE ROPE, DO NOT BREAK THE CONNECTION
Allah states:
“Hold firmly, all together, to the rope of Allah and do not become divided.”
— Ali ‘Imran 3:103
A rope has a function:
TO CONNECT.
A broken rope can no longer connect its two ends.
Therefore, “do not become divided” should not be understood only as:
“Do not quarrel.”
The deeper question is:
IS THE ROPE STILL CONNECTED?
⸻
14. THE JAMA‘AH IS NOT SIMPLY A CROWD
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
يَدُ اللَّهِ مَعَ الْجَمَاعَةِ
“The Hand of Allah is with al-Jama‘ah.”
— Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, no. 2166
Al-Jama‘ah is not simply a large number of people standing inside one building.
The Jama‘ah has:
an imam,
followers,
a direction,
the act of following,
and a connection.
⸻
15. THE STRONGEST HADITH FOR “JAMA‘AH + IMAM”
Hudhayfah asked about times of tribulation.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:
تَلْزَمُ جَمَاعَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِمَامَهُمْ
“Adhere to the Jama‘ah of the Muslims and their imam.”
Hudhayfah asked:
“What if they have neither a Jama‘ah nor an imam?”
He replied:
“Then keep away from all those groups.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 7084
This is extremely important.
The hadith does not mention only:
Jama‘ah.
It mentions:
JAMA‘AH + IMAM.
⸻
16. WHERE THERE IS A JAMA‘AH, THERE IS AN IMAM
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ
“The imam has only been appointed to be followed.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 722 — Sahih Muslim, no. 414
Therefore, the imam is not a decoration.
The imam exists because:
لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ
He is to be followed.
⸻
17. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER IS A KEY TO REFLECTION
Why does the Shariah repeat this structure every day?
The imam stands in front.
The followers stand behind.
The rows are arranged.
There is one Qiblah.
The imam moves.
The followers follow.
The followers do not move ahead of the imam.
A latecomer joins and continues from what they managed to receive.
Are all these simply bodily movements?
Or should human beings reflect?
Fiqh must align with Aqidah.
If during PRAYER we understand:
“Do not move ahead of the imam,”
but outside PRAYER everyone wants to become their own imam,
then we have understood the movements but have not learned the lesson.
⸻
18. CARRY THE CHARACTER OF PRAYER BEYOND PRAYER
Do not leave the character taught by congregational prayer on the prayer mat.
Carry it into life:
Follow the imam.
Do not move ahead.
Do not break the rows.
The direction must remain the same.
The follower must understand their position.
The imam must also remain connected to the original imam.
This is how the Shariah teaches Aqidah through the body.
⸻
19. THE ANALOGY OF THE LATECOMING FOLLOWER — AN ILLUSTRATION OF SANAD
The first imam leads.
Then a follower arrives late.
He manages to join the final rak‘ah.
The imam concludes with salam.
That follower continues.
Then another person arrives after him.
He follows.
And then another.
The connection continues.
The last person may never have seen the first imam.
But they remain within a connected row through what has been received.
That is the analogy of Sanad.
⸻
20. PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS THE ORIGINAL IMAM
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the original imam of this Ummah.
He is:
Ummī.
The original source.
The original pattern.
He did not obtain the pattern of this Ummah from the imams who came after him.
Everyone who comes after him occupies the position of a receiver.
Some later become imams for subsequent generations.
But every imam after him remains:
A FOLLOWER OF THE PATTERN OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ.
⸻
21. CONCLUSION: FOUR TEXTS, ONE CONTINUOUS LINE
The hadith concerning division:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
“What I and my Companions are upon.”
The hadith concerning the one group:
وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ
“It is al-Jama‘ah.”
The hadith concerning widespread disagreement:
فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي
“Hold firmly to my Sunnah.”
The hadith concerning times of tribulation:
تَلْزَمُ جَمَاعَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِمَامَهُمْ
“Adhere to the Jama‘ah of the Muslims and their imam.”
These four texts converge upon:
SUNNAH.
JAMA‘AH.
IMAM.
CONNECTION.
Therefore, do not be too quick to declare:
“I am Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah.”
Ask:
Has the profile of Muhammad ﷺ overcome my own profile?
Am I truly following the Sunnah?
Am I part of the Jama‘ah?
Who is the imam?
Who is his teacher?
Who transmitted the knowledge to him?
How far does that Sanad extend?
Because Al-Baqarah 2:54 teaches:
Remove the ignorant profile.
Al-Baqarah 2:254 reminds us:
Give before the opportunity closes.
Al-Baqarah 2:207 shows:
Some people surrender themselves.
At-Tawbah 9:111 emphasises:
The self and wealth are surrendered.
And Muhammad ﷺ provides the pattern:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ
“What I am upon.”
Therefore:
AHL AL-SUNNAH = THE PERSONAL PROFILE SUBMITS TO THE PATTERN OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ.
WAL-JAMA‘AH = THE CONTINUOUS CONNECTION TO THE ORIGINAL IMAM.
Congregational PRAYER has demonstrated this structure every day:
Imam.
Followers.
Rows.
Following.
Connection.
One direction.
Do not let it all end with the salam.
CARRY THE CHARACTER OF PRAYER BEYOND PRAYER.
