Do Not Assume That Being Muslim Means You Are Already Safe

The greatest danger is not when someone openly says:

“I am not a Muslim.”

A far subtler danger is when someone says:

“I am Muslim. I already believe. I am already safe.”

Yet the Quran warns about people who say:

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

“And among the people are those who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ while they are not believers.”

— Al-Baqarah 2:8

Notice.

They CLAIM TO BELIEVE.

But their claim does not guarantee anything.

Surah Al-Munāfiqūn also begins with a declaration:

قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ

“We bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah.”

— Al-Munāfiqūn 63:1

What they say appears to be true.

Yet the Quran calls them liars because what they say does not correspond with the reality within themselves.

Therefore, do not turn the words:

“I AM MUSLIM”

into a ticket to salvation.

Do not regard:

SALAH,

fasting,

charity,

religious clothing,

the title of ustaz,

memorisation of religious texts,

or an abundance of religious evidence,

as absolute proof that someone is already safe.

The Quran itself describes the hypocrites standing for SALAH:

وَإِذَا قَامُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ قَامُوا۟ كُسَالَىٰ

“When they stand for Salah, they stand lazily.”

— An-Nisa’ 4:142

They also give.

They also swear oaths.

They also use religious language.

But the question is not merely:

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTWARDLY?

The question is:

WHAT DO YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND AND BELIEVE?

More alarming still, the Prophet ﷺ warned that his own Ummah would become divided.

A narration in Abu Dawud states:

وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْمِلَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ ثِنْتَانِ وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ

“Indeed, this community will divide into seventy-three groups; seventy-two will be in the Fire and one will be in Paradise.”

— Sunan Abi Dawud 4597

This hadith does not say that all seventy-two groups are hypocrites.

But it destroys one dangerous assumption:

“AS LONG AS I AM PART OF THE MUSLIM UMMAH, I AM CERTAINLY SAFE.”

No.

The hadith itself warns that division and misguidance can occur within an Ummah that identifies itself as Muslim.

That is why human beings must continually examine themselves.

Instead of being preoccupied with pointing at others:

“He is a disbeliever.”

“He is misguided.”

“He is a hypocrite.”

Ask instead:

DO I ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THE FAITH THAT I PROFESS?

Are the Pillars of Iman merely six lines that I have memorised?

Or have they become an understanding that cannot be separated from my very self?

Because a hypocrite can also speak about faith.

A hypocrite can also exist within a Muslim community.

A hypocrite can also perform outward religious practices.

Indeed, the warning concerning them is severe:

إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ فِى ٱلدَّرْكِ ٱلْأَسْفَلِ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ

“Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire.”

— An-Nisa’ 4:145

Therefore, the greatest question is not:

“IS THE NAME OF MY RELIGION ISLAM?”

But:

“DO I TRULY UNDERSTAND WHAT I CLAIM TO BELIEVE?”

The ulama are not exempt either.

A person may memorise thousands of pages yet remain imprisoned within the text.

The Quran asks:

وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

“While you recite the Book; will you not then understand?”

— Al-Baqarah 2:44

They READ THE BOOK.

Yet they are still asked:

أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

“Will you not use reason?”

This is the danger of THE PRISON OF TEXT.

More texts.

More memorisation.

More quotations.

But if understanding does not develop, the walls of the prison only become thicker.

Eventually, a person may become highly skilled at defending what they have memorised—

yet never have the courage to ask:

“DO I TRULY UNDERSTAND?”

Do not assume that you are safe merely because you carry the name MUSLIM.

Do not assume that you are safe merely because you belong to a large group.

Do not assume that you are safe merely because you have teachers, books and certificates.

Do not assume that you are safe merely because your tongue can recite the Pillars of Iman.

Because the real test is not merely:

CAN YOU RECITE THEM?

But:

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THEM UNTIL THEY ENTER THE HEART?

ISLAM IN NAME DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IMAN WITHIN THE SELF.

DO NOT IMPRISON IMAN ON THE TONGUE.

DO NOT IMPRISON THE QURAN IN THE THROAT.
