An-Naba’: The Greatest News That Humanity Takes Lightly

September 25, 2026By SIHULK7 min read

Surah An-Naba’ begins with people questioning one another about the Great News:

“What are they asking one another about? About the Great News.”

— An-Naba’ 78:1–2

That greatest news is Qiyāmah.

Humanity’s problem is not that the news has never reached them. The problem is that they read, memorise and repeat it, yet still miss its meaning. The signs of Qiyāmah are reduced to merely “signs that Qiyāmah is approaching”, as though everything is still far away.

They wait for the earth to break apart.

Yet this very surah introduces the earth as:

“Have We not made the earth an expanse?”

— An-Naba’ 78:6

The earth is an expanse.

It is not necessarily the earth that breaks apart.

What breaks apart is the human world.

⸻

1–5 — THE NEWS OVER WHICH THEY DISAGREE

“What are they asking one another about?”

“About the Great News.”

“Over which they disagree.”

“No! They will come to know.”

“Then again, no! They will come to know.”

They disagree because they see Qiyāmah as a story belonging to the distant future.

But eventually:

سَيَعْلَمُونَ — they will come to know.

No longer theory.

No longer memorisation.

No longer debate.

The truth will become manifest.

⸻

6–10 — THE EARTH IS AN EXPANSE, NOT SOMETHING TO WAIT FOR TO BREAK APART

“Have We not made the earth an expanse?”

“And the mountains as pegs?”

“And We created you in pairs.”

“And We made your sleep for rest.”

“And We made the night as a covering.”

The pairing of male and female is real.

But pairing within life is broader:

night–day,

sleep–wakefulness,

life–death,

world–Akhirah.

The world is the adornment of life upon the earth.

Therefore:

EARTH ≠ WORLD

The earth may continue to remain an expanse, while the human world may change completely.

⸻

11–16 — SEVEN REALMS AND THE CYCLE OF LIFE

“And We made the day for life and seeking livelihood.”

“And We built above you seven mighty ones.”

“And We made a brilliantly blazing lamp.”

“And We sent down from the rain-bearing clouds abundant water.”

“So that through it We may bring forth grains and vegetation.”

“And lush gardens.”

Within this reading, the seven mighty ones are connected with the seven realms of the human journey:

1. Realm of Ruh
2. Realm of the Father’s Seed
3. Realm of the Mother’s Womb
4. Worldly Realm
5. Realm of Barzakh
6. Realm of Mahshar
7. Akhirah Realm

Human beings do not stop at the world.

The world is merely one stopping point in the journey through the seven realms.

Verses 13–16, meanwhile, describe heat, water and the products of life. Within this reading of the natural world, volcanic eruptions release lava, ash and hot material; rain then carries material back to the earth, and the soil can become fertile again.

Volcanoes erupt throughout the earth and may continue to do so according to the earth’s geological systems.

Therefore, changes in the natural world do not necessarily mean that the earth ceases to exist.

The earth can still bring forth life again.

⸻

17–20 — THE DAY OF SEPARATION

“Indeed, the Day of Separation has an appointed time.”

“On the Day when it is blown into aṣ-Ṣūr, you will come in groups.”

“And the heaven is opened and becomes gateways.”

“And the mountains are moved and become like a mirage.”

The key phrase is:

يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ — the Day of Separation.

Within this reading, the blowing is not merely a cosmic sound awaited from the sky.

It is read as the human being’s final breath.

Not merely one individual, but human beings come:

أَفْوَاجًا — in groups.

Human beings fall, each undergoing their final breath.

Verse 19 also does not necessarily have to be read as “the sky breaking apart”.

Within this reading, heaven refers to the aspect of the human Ruh that begins to open, marking the phase of separation between the Ruh and the physical body.

Thus, “the heaven is opened and becomes gateways” becomes an image of transition from one realm into the next.

Verse 20 then mentions the mountains being moved.

Within this reading of the natural world, volcanic eruptions occurring across different regions of the earth become an image of immense upheaval in the natural world.

⸻

21–30 — TRANSGRESSING THE LIMITS AFTER THE WARNING HAS ARRIVED

“Indeed, Jahannam is lying in wait.”

“For those who transgress the limits, as a place of return.”

“They will remain therein for ages.”

“They will taste therein neither coolness nor drink.”

“Except intensely hot water and something bitterly cold or foul.”

“As a fitting recompense.”

“Indeed, they did not expect an accounting.”

“And they utterly denied Our signs.”

“And everything We have enumerated in a record.”

“So taste! We will increase you in nothing but torment.”

Within this reading, transgressing the limits is not because they had never read the Quran or hadith at all.

They had already read.

They had already heard.

They had already memorised.

But knowledge stopped at the throat.

Repetition became the measure.

Memorisation became the measure.

And a message that challenged established habits was condemned and suppressed through fatwas declaring it misguided.

They assumed that because they had studied, they were already safe.

Yet:

They still deny the signs when their meaning conflicts with what they are accustomed to hearing.

The torment, meanwhile, becomes prolonged.

There is no relief.

Heat because of regret.

Cold because realisation came too late.

⸻

31–34 — WHAT IS REAPED

“Indeed, for those who are mindful of Allah there is triumph.”

“Gardens and grapes.”

“And companions of equal age.”

“And a brimming cup.”

The gardens portray flourishing life and the harvest of what was planted in the world.

Within this reading, companions of equal age are understood as corresponding and proportionate outcomes, rather than as a sexual narrative that diverts attention from the surah’s greater message.

The cup, meanwhile, represents:

the triumph that has been attained.

Not a medal.

Not an ornament.

But the human being reaching the outcome of the journey.

⸻

35–37 — THE TRUTH CAN NO LONGER BE DENIED

“They will hear therein neither idle speech nor denial.”

“As a recompense from your Lord, a sufficient gift.”

“Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever lies between them, the Most Merciful. They have no authority to address Him.”

What they learned and believed eventually truly takes place.

No more denial.

No more “that is only a myth”.

No more “it has not happened yet”.

They find sufficiency in the realisation that the journey is true.

Within this reading:

heaven is connected with the Ruh,

earth is connected with the physical body,

and what lies between them is the life produced through the union of the Ruh and the physical body.

Then the two move towards separation.

⸻

38–39 — THE DAY OF TRUTH

“On the Day when ar-Rūḥ and the angels stand in rows. They will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and who speaks what is right.”

“That is the Day of Truth. So whoever wills, let them take a path of return to their Lord.”

The Day of Truth is the day when human beings see clearly:

what is true is indeed true,

and what is false is indeed false.

Truth can no longer be concealed by titles.

Falsehood can no longer be decorated with authority.

Fatwas can no longer turn what is wrong into what is right.

And human beings see with the eyes of their own awareness.

⸻

40 — UNBEARABLE REGRET

“Indeed, We have warned you of a near torment, on the Day when a person sees what their own hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever says: ‘If only I were dust.’”

— An-Naba’ 78:40

The warning has already been given.

But they rejected it.

They mocked it.

They suppressed the message through fatwas.

When the consequences arrive, they see for themselves:

“What their own hands have sent forth.”

There is no one else left to blame.

The regret becomes so overwhelming that they wish to die.

They wish to become dust again.

They wish to stop experiencing that torment.

⸻

CONCLUSION

An-Naba’ is the Greatest News in human life.

The earth is described as an expanse.

Mountains change.

The world changes.

The Ruh begins to separate from the physical body.

Human beings move through seven realms:

RUH → FATHER’S SEED → MOTHER’S WOMB → WORLD → BARZAKH → MAHSHAR → AKHIRAH

The blowing is read as the final breath.

The opening of heaven is read as the opening of the phase in which the Ruh separates from the physical body.

The Day of Separation is the transition from the world into the next realm.

The Day of Truth is the day when human beings finally see:

what is true is truly true,

and what is false is truly false.

Human beings wait for the earth to break apart.

Yet what breaks apart is their world.

And when everything is unveiled, human beings finally come to know that:

WHAT IS PLANTED IN THE WORLD IS WHAT WILL ULTIMATELY BE REAPED.
