Ya’juj and Ma’juj Within the Self — Humanity Waits for Them Outside, While Their Pattern Is Already Within

Many people read the story of Ya’juj and Ma’juj with the same image in mind:

two mysterious peoples will emerge,

a great barrier will break,

an attack will come from outside.

And so humanity waits.

But the Quran does not merely tell human beings to look for signs on the earth. The Quran also tells them to look within themselves:

وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ ۝ وَفِي أَنفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

“And on the earth are signs for those who have certainty. And within yourselves. Will you not then see?”

— Az-Zariyat 51:20–21

Therefore, the story of Ya’juj and Ma’juj should be examined on two scales:

the greater earth

and

the smaller earth — the human being.

1. A LANGUAGE THAT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND

When Zulkarnain reached the area between the two barriers, the Quran states:

وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا

“He found before them a people who could hardly understand speech.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:93

On the scale of the greater earth, our reading connects this with the region of Georgia and the Caucasus.

The Georgian language belongs to the Kartvelian language family and is often regarded as particularly challenging for foreign learners, partly because of its distinctive writing system, different grammatical structure and complex consonant clusters.

But now look at the smaller earth.

Human beings also carry a “language” that is extremely difficult to understand completely:

THE LANGUAGE OF DNA.

DNA is built from only four main bases:

A — Adenine

T — Thymine

C — Cytosine

G — Guanine

Only four “letters”.

Yet these four letters are arranged in an extraordinarily vast sequence that forms instructions for life, growth, repair and bodily functions.

It is easy to read four letters.

It is extremely difficult to understand the entire language.

Therefore:

the complex language on the greater earth

meets the complex genetic language on the smaller earth.

This is a symbolic mapping, not a claim that 18:93 literally describes DNA.

2. YA’JUJ AND MA’JUJ — THE CORRUPTER AND THE CORRUPTED

The following verse states:

إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ

“Indeed, Ya’juj and Ma’juj are corrupters upon the earth.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:94

Within the reading of the self:

YA’JUJ

= an element, action or process that brings corruption.

MA’JUJ

= the self or structure that receives and experiences that corruption.

Thus, one becomes an image of the corrupter.

The other becomes an image of that which is corrupted.

The human body itself is a “smaller earth” with its own system, balance, boundaries and order.

If that order continues to be disrupted, the corruption no longer remains confined to a single point.

It can spread throughout the entire system.

3. ZULKARNAIN BUILDS A BARRIER

Zulkarnain did not merely attack Ya’juj and Ma’juj.

He built something more important:

A BARRIER.

آتُونِي زُبَرَ الْحَدِيدِ

“Bring me blocks of iron.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:96

The iron was then heated and qiṭr was poured over it.

Finally:

فَمَا اسْطَاعُوا أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا لَهُ نَقْبًا

“They were unable to climb over it, nor were they able to pierce through it.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:97

Its central meaning is extremely powerful:

CORRUPTION MUST BE PREVENTED FROM CONTINUING TO PENETRATE.

Within the reading of the greater earth, we connect this barrier with a geopolitical buffer zone.

Within the reading of the smaller earth, we see it as an analogy for protective structures and the organisation of life, including the ordered and paired structure of DNA.

The two strands of DNA provide an interesting image of two interconnected walls that preserve the organisation of life’s information.

4. THE BARRIER DOES NOT LAST FOREVER

Zulkarnain himself said:

فَإِذَا جَاءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّي جَعَلَهُ دَكَّاءَ

“When the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:98

Then Al-Anbiya’ states:

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فُتِحَتْ يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ

“Until, when Ya’juj and Ma’juj are opened…”

— Al-Anbiya’ 21:96

The important word is:

فُتِحَتْ

OPENED.

Within the reading of the self, the question becomes immense:

What happens when the barrier of a living system is opened, altered or penetrated?

This is where human beings need to understand that technology is not the enemy.

Technology is merely a tool.

A knife can be used to save a life during surgery.

The same knife can be used to cause harm.

Therefore, the question is not:

“Is technology evil or not?”

The questions are:

Who designs it?

What is its purpose?

How is the technology used?

And what choices do human beings themselves make?

Technology alone is not to blame.

Human plans and human choices determine the consequences.

5. “SURGING AMONG ONE ANOTHER”

After the barrier is mentioned, Al-Kahfi 18:99 gives a particularly striking image:

وَتَرَكْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَمُوجُ فِي بَعْضٍ

“And We will leave some of them on that Day surging among one another.”

— Al-Kahfi 18:99

The word:

يَمُوجُ

yamūju

carries the image of surging, churning, mixing and moving among one another.

On the greater earth, it can describe human beings colliding and mixing with one another.

On the smaller earth, we read this image through the DNA helix, which has a spiral form and participates in dynamic molecular interactions.

Thus, within this symbolic hypothesis, when genetic structures undergo editing or alteration, that “surging” is read as turbulence within the interactions of a system that was originally ordered.

This does not mean that the Quran is providing a molecular biology textbook.

But the image:

BARRIER → OPENED → MIXING → TURBULENCE

becomes particularly interesting when compared with a biological system that also depends upon highly precise organisation, boundaries and interactions.

We cannot simply say that verse 18:99 scientifically proves that “DNA frequencies become turbulent because of genetic editing”.

That would require experimental evidence.

But as a mapping, the image of yamūju fī ba‘ḍ is powerful:

something that was previously bounded begins to mix and interact.

6. HUMANITY WAITS FOR YA’JUJ AND MA’JUJ OUTSIDE

This is perhaps what many people overlook the most.

Human beings ask:

“Where is the barrier of Ya’juj and Ma’juj?”

“In which mountain are they located?”

“When will they emerge?”

But they rarely ask:

Could the pattern of Ya’juj and Ma’juj already be taking place within the human being?

If the body is the smaller earth, then corruption within the body is also corruption within an “earth”.

If DNA carries the language of life, then interference with that language is no small matter.

If there is a barrier, do not wait until that barrier disappears before trying to understand its function.

And if human beings themselves are given a choice, do not blame technology after human beings themselves have chosen how that technology is used.

YA’JUJ = THAT WHICH CORRUPTS

MA’JUJ = THAT WHICH BECOMES CORRUPTED

ZULKARNAIN = BUILDS THE BARRIER

THE BARRIER = PREVENTS CORRUPTION

THE BARRIER IS OPENED = THE BOUNDARY IS DISRUPTED

يَمُوجُ = TURBULENCE AND MIXING

Human beings wait for Ya’juj and Ma’juj to emerge from behind a mountain.

Yet the Quran has already said:

وَفِي أَنفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

“And within yourselves. Will you not then see?”

DO NOT ONLY SEARCH FOR YA’JUJ AND MA’JUJ ON THE MAP.
