A Stern Warning: Knowledge That Stops at the Throat

BEWARE! DO NOT BE OVERCONFIDENT THAT RECITING THE QURAN EXTENSIVELY, MEMORISING HADITH AND MASTERING RELIGIOUS TEXTS WILL SAVE YOU.
For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned about people who recite the Quran yet still depart from the religion.
Even more frightening — they may not realise that they are going astray.
They continue to recite the Quran.
They continue to quote hadith.
They continue to speak in the name of religion.
They continue to pass judgment on others.
Yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ
“They recite the Quran, but their recitation does not go beyond their throats.”
DO NOT LET THE QURAN BE MERELY A SOUND UPON YOUR LIPS WITHOUT EVER REACHING YOUR HEART.
Knowledge remains on the tongue.
Memorisation remains in the mind.
But the heart is not penetrated by the light of understanding.
This is the danger of knowledge that stops at the outward level, without spiritual guidance that nurtures the inner self.
Even more terrifying, such a person may be completely unaware that they are going astray.
They believe themselves to be defenders of religion.
They believe themselves to be the most knowledgeable.
They believe that every Quranic verse and hadith they utter represents the truth.
Then they begin to pass judgment.
They begin to declare others misguided.
They begin to declare others disbelievers.
They begin to declare others apostates.
Yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described them:
يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ
“They depart from the religion just as an arrow passes through its target.”
This is the most devastating calamity:
GOING ASTRAY WITHOUT REALISING IT.
It is not that they do not know how to read religious texts.
Rather, they read religious texts without allowing religion to enter their hearts.
It is not that they possess no knowledge.
Rather, their knowledge ultimately becomes a weapon used to lead others astray.
